When shopping for a sword, dagger, or khukuri, the most important factor in the weapon's performance is the type of steel used. The most common debate is between high-carbon steel and stainless steel. Here is what you need to know.
The Problem with Stainless Steel Stainless steel is highly resistant to rust because it contains a large amount of chromium. While this makes it perfect for silverware and display pieces, chromium makes the steel brittle. If you strike a target with a long stainless steel sword, the blade is likely to snap or shatter upon impact. Stainless steel weapons should only be used as "wall-hangers" or decorative pieces.

Durability: Carbon gives the steel exceptional strength and flexibility. A properly heat-treated carbon steel sword will flex upon impact and return to its original shape.

The Trade-Off The only downside to high-carbon steel is that it requires maintenance. Because it lacks chromium, it will rust if left wet or un-oiled. However, for a fully functional, battle-ready weapon, high-carbon steel is the only choice.
