A khukuri (or kukri) is a distinctively curved, forward-swept knife indigenous to the Himalayas, most famously recognized as the traditional utility tool and signature weapon of the Nepalese Gurkhas. Its most defining feature is the pronounced inward curve of the blade, which shifts the center of mass forward to deliver devastating chopping power, allowing it to function much like a machete or a small axe. The blade typically features a thick spine for structural durability and a unique, traditional notch near the handle called a cho (or kaudi), which practically stops sap or blood from reaching the grip while holding deep cultural and religious symbolism. Traditionally forged from high-carbon steel and fitted with a handle made of hardwood, bone, or water buffalo horn, the khukuri is a highly versatile, rugged implement that is equally adept at clearing dense brush, processing wood, and serving in close-quarters combat.
